Diet & feeding

Small fish and aquatic insects caught on dives.

Diving (disappears fully underwater) Small (teal-sized, under 45 cm)

Habitat

Lakes, reservoirs and sheltered coasts, especially in cold winters.

Breeding

Does not breed in the UK; nests in tree holes in the northern taiga.

Migration

Arrives in midwinter, with numbers peaking during cold snaps.

Vocalisation

Males give a soft, bell-like display note.
